Landis filmed the sequence, but during early test screenings, the sudden shift into a musical number completely derailed the tension of the third act. In the novelization, after David survives the initial attack, he is visited by the ghost of Jack, who is decaying. In the book, Jack offers David a bottle of Dr Pepper. David thinks he’s crazy. Jack says, "If I were a hallucination, would I know you love Dr Pepper?" David drinks it, and the soda pours right through Jack’s rotting chest and onto the floor.
Viewers found the visual gore so intense and distracting that it completely halted the momentum of the third act. Landis opted to cut the entire sequence.
